Massachusetts Rep. Mike Capuano loses to liberal challenger Ayanna Pressley

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley delivered another stunning upset to the Democratic establishment Tuesday night, defeating Rep. Mike Capuano, who conceded defeat in the party’s primary for Massachusetts’ 7th District.

Despite Capuano’s long list of progressive credentials, Pressley seized on an energy among the Democratic base. Progressive groups have battled with party establishment over how best to win back majorities in Congress, arguing Democrats should back more electrifying, young, and diverse candidates.

Pressley pitched herself as an outsider that would shake up Washington despite her history in politics. Capuano tried to stave off the challenge, touting his experience as a needed asset in Washington should Democrats gain control after November. He conceded early Tuesday night, with less than 5 percent of precincts reporting.

“Congressman Mike Capuano has been a fine, progressive member of Congress, but having an experienced progressive like Ayanna Pressley on the ballot is an unmissable opportunity for Massachusetts to both ensure a leading woman of color represents its only majority-minority district,” said Jim Dean, chair of Democracy for America. “And add the voice of just one person of color to New England’s currently all-white congressional delegation.”

Pressley received the endorsements of both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. She also received a boost from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated Democrat Joe Crowley in June.
