Jacob Blake released from hospital after surviving police shooting in Kenosha

Jacob Blake has been released from a Milwaukee hospital.

The 29-year-old was sent to the hospital where he was determined to be paralyzed from the waist down after being shot several times at close range after trying to reach into his car during an arrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Aug. 23.

Patrick Cafferty, an attorney for Blake, said on Wednesday that his client was recently released to receive further treatment at “a spinal injury rehabilitation center in Chicago.” Cafferty did not specify the exact date that Blake was released and said he could not “provide more details” about Blake’s rehabilitation plans.

The shooting of Blake, who is black, prompted renewed protests and riots throughout the country in what was a summer of civil unrest spurred by calls to address police brutality and racial inequality. Two people were killed in a shooting that took place during one August night of riots in Kenosha, and officials called in the National Guard to restore order in the city. Blake’s mother, Julia Jackson, condemned the riots.

For some time after the shooting, Blake was handcuffed to his hospital bed while authorities considered charges against him. He was eventually uncuffed and has not been charged with any crimes from that day, though he did have an outstanding warrant for his arrest in connection to a sexual assault allegation.

The use of force by the Kenosha Police Department is still under review. The officer who allegedly shot Blake, Rusten Sheskey, has not been charged and has been placed on leave from the department while they investigate the shooting.
