Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was admitted to the hospital for observation as a result of a preexisting condition.
The Duke of Edinburgh, 98, was hospitalized “on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor” to receive treatment and remain under observation, according to the BBC.
Phillip, who married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947, retired from his public duties in 2017 but has continued to appear alongside the queen for many major events.
In a statement, the palace said, “The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition. The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor.”
The duke will spend a few days under observation, but his condition was not treated as an emergency, and he was not taken in via ambulance.
The royal family has been dealing with an international scandal after Prince Andrew, the son of the queen and Phillip, was entangled in the sex trafficking accusations against convicted sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein.
