Former FBI Director James Comey broke a date with his wife in order to have an awkward dinner with President Trump in January where Trump demanded loyalty.
Trump associates have spun the dinner as an attempt for Comey to try and talk Trump into keeping his job, but Comey said he didn’t initiate the dinner.
“He (Trump) called me at my desk at lunchtime and asked me if I was free for dinner that night,” Comey said.
“I said, ‘Yessir,’ he said, ‘Will 6 work?’ He said, ‘I was doing to invite your whole family, but we’ll do that next time, I wanted you to come over, is 6 a good time to come over?’ I said ‘Sir, whatever works for you.’ And he said 6:30, and I said, ‘Whatever works for you sir.'”
“And then he hung up and I had to call my wide to break a date with her, I was supposed to take her out to dinner that night.”
Comey was asked at that dinner to pledge loyalty to Trump. Comey ended up saying he would give Trump honesty, which turned into a pledge of “honest loyalty.”
Comey, in his prepared testimony, said the dinner was awkward and full of long silences.
“In retrospect, I love spending time with my wife, I wish I had been there that night,” he said.
