The NCAA has picked the new relocation sites for seven championship events that were scheduled to be held in North Carolina.
Last month, the NCAA said it would be moving the games out of North Carolina due to its controversial bathroom law known as HB2.
“We appreciate our member institutions and the many cities across the country who were involved in the bid process for these championship sites,” Joni Comstock, NCAA interim executive vice president of championships and alliances, said in a statement.
“The sports committees were pleased with the quantity and quality of the bids received and are confident the selected sites will host championships that provide an outstanding experience for student-athletes, membership and fans.”
The opening two rounds of the 2017 Division I Men’s Basketball Championship were scheduled to be played March 17 and 19 in Greensboro, N.C. The games now will be played on the same dates at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C.
Other events moved to other states include: Division I Women’s Soccer Championship, College Cup, Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships, Division I Women’s Golf Championships regionals, Division III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship and the 2017 Division II Baseball Championship.
The NBA also pulled the 2017 All-Star game from Charlotte in response to HB2. The law mandates that transgender people use the bathroom facility that corresponds with their birth gender, not gender identity.
