The Democratic campaign looking to unseat Rep. Dave Brat in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District says it kicked out someone representing the conservative investigative group Project Veritas after one of their undercover reporters infiltrated a field office in Richmond.
The campaign for Democrat Abigail Spanberger said that a young woman working for Project Veritas went undercover as a Democratic volunteer, and campaign workers became wary when she started asking them questions that raised red flags.
Staffers confronted the woman, who the campaign identified as Marisa Jorge, according to the Washington Post, and asked her to leave the office.
“Dirty tricks like these are the worst part of politics, and this is exactly what Abigail is running to change,” Dana Bye, Spanberger’s campaign manager, told the Post. “While others may scrape the bottom of the barrel out of desperation, Abigail and our campaign will remain focused on talking to our neighbors on their doorsteps about the issues that matter to our community.”
A spokeswoman for Brat said the congressman’s campaign had no involvement with the undercover volunteer.
James O’Keefe, the founder of Project Veritas, said there were some things revealed from its investigation, but said the effort was cut short when Jorge was ousted.
The Post said O’Keefe released two videos of conversations between Jorge, Spanberger, and staffer Michael Phelan. One conversation discussed the “diversity” of Spanberger donors, which includes former FBI director James Comey and Jonathan Soros, the son of billionaire Democratic megadonor George Soros.
The other video touched on the border wall, where Phelan called it “stupid” and a waste of money.
