Judge blocks insurer mega merger

A federal judge has blocked a potential merger between insurance giants Aetna and Humana because of antitrust concerns.

The judge blocked the potential deal because it was anticompetitive, according to published reports. Healthcare experts expect another insurer merger, between Anthem and Cigna, to be blocked as well.

It is not clear if Aetna or Humana will appeal the decision. The insurers extended the timeline to decide whether they wanted to terminate the agreement last month, extending it from Dec. 31 to Feb. 15.
