Retired Marine Gen. John Allen told veterans and military families that he’s concerned Donald Trump will radicalize America’s Islamic allies.
Allen, who supports Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, expressed anxiety about Trump’s comments on Muslims during a private call organized by the Democratic nominee’s presidential campaign.
“My deep concern is some of those comments themselves have the capacity of radicalizing large segments of Muslim populations that otherwise would have been willing to work with the United States,” Allen said on the call. “But radicalized by those comments about Muslims not being permitted in the United States and some of the really disparaging comments that we have heard come out of that campaign, my fear is that he, in fact, has become one of the forces that radicalize our partners in Islam and can create in and of itself a problem with respect to Islam.”
Allen also said he’s gravely concerned about Trump’s comments regarding nuclear weapons, and made the case that Clinton has the temperament and capability to serve as commander in chief. The general made the comments before Wednesday night’s Commander in Chief Forum featuring Trump and Clinton.
On Thursday, Clinton appeared to up the ante from Allen’s comments on Trump and Muslims by arguing that Islamic State terrorists would prefer Trump win the presidential election. The Trump campaign responded by calling Clinton’s attack “desperate.”
