Trump expected to pick Dina Powell for deputy national security adviser

President Trump is expected to name his senior counselor for economic initiatives, Dina Powell, as his new deputy national security adviser, according to multiple reports Wednesday evening.

Powell worked for former President George W. Bush and currently works alongside Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, as an adviser to Trump. She will continue to advise Trump on economic issues in her national security post.

K.T. McFarland is currently the deputy national security adviser, and the Trump administration has not yet said what will become of her. Since former national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned, some in the administration have indicated that McFarland could be moved into a different role.

Flynn was forced out after deceiving Vice President Pence about conversations he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the transition period about rescinding U.S. sanctions on Russia.

Powell is expected to work with national security adviser H.R. McMaster, developing strategy for long-term issues. In addition, Powell will help lead an inter-agency policy process in cooperation with State Sec. Rex Tillerson, CIA Director Mike Pompeo and Defense Sec. Jim Mattis.
