The federal government has yet to pay more than $7 million in expenses from President Trump’s inauguration in 2017.
Washington, D.C., was forced to use money from funds that typically cover annual security costs for protecting the city from terror threats, during demonstrations and hosting visits from foreign dignities and state funerals, the Washington Post reports.
The report comes as Trump plans to speak at the Lincoln Memorial on the Fourth of July, an event which will have security costs of its own.
A senior Trump administration official said the nation’s capital was given the funding it originally requested to cover inauguration costs. When the costs were higher than anticipated, the administration “worked closely with D.C.” and decided to use money from the security fund. The official said the city has not asked for additional money.
City officials disputed that was the case. They said they asked for more money before and after the inauguration.
