County to promote drug savings program

Anne Arundel County is using a media blitz to encourage patronage in ScriptSave, a free discount prescription drug program that could save residents 25 percent on their purchases.

“There is increasing evidence that people aren?t aware of this program,” County Health Officer Frances Phillips said. “This plan can give people a sizable discount.”

The program offers a discount from the retail price of prescription drugsand other medical needs, such as eyeglasses and hearing aid equipment, that aren?t covered by insurance plans.

The ScriptSave card will not work with insurance providers? prescription cards but gives people a possible cheaper option, officials said.

Since the program?s inception five years ago, 7,600 residents have signed up, generating a net savings of $285,000. The program comes at no cost to residents and the government.

But county officials say more residents should be involved, and they are promoting it through the media and the county?s Web site. The program has no money for advertising, which is why the turnout may not have met expectations.

“We?ve done a decent job getting these programs for county residents, but more needs to be done advertising it,” County Executive John Leopold said. “We hope to get the word out so people can get on board.”
