Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., has been hospitalized in Atlanta after he fell ill on a plane.
Specifics about his condition haven’t been disclosed, but his spokesperson Brenda Jones said he was admitted for “routine observation” and is expected to be released Sunday.
“There is no cause for alarm. He will be fine. He’s resting comfortably and expects to be released tomorrow,” Jones said in a brief statement sent to ABC News.
Lewis, 78, was a chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s and was a leading figure in the civil rights movement against racial segregation.
He has served as the representative of Georgia’s 5th Congressional District since 1986. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 by then-President Barack Obama and has been a vocal critic of President Trump.
