Former House Speaker John Boehner ripped into Sen. Ted Cruz at an event at Stanford University Wednesday night, by referring to him as “lucifer in the flesh,” and saying he “never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”
Boehner made the remarks when asked for “frank” comments on those in the presidential field. He didn’t hold back when discussing Cruz, and reportedly making a face when asked about the Texas senator who’s challenging Donald Trump for the GOP presidential nomination
“Lucifer in the flesh,” Boehner said. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”
These are not Boehner’s first comments of this sort about Cruz. In August, Boehner referred to Cruz as a “jackass” at a fundraiser in Colorado, which he confirmed soon after he announced his impending resignation from the speakership.
The former speaker’s remarks come only a day after Trump swept all five of the voting states on Tuesday, jacking up his lead in the delegate chase over Cruz, who was nearly shut out on Tuesday. Boehner also made the comments not long after Cruz announced Carly Fiorina as his vice presidential selection as he tries to change the narrative and gain momentum heading into next Tuesday’s Indiana primary, which could help determine whether Trump reaches the 1,237 delegate marker before the July convention.
Boehner also reportedly told the crowd at Stanford that while he would vote for Trump if he ends up taking home the Republican nomination, he would not vote for Cruz. The Ohio Republican has endorsed Gov. John Kasich’s presidential campaign.
While talking about the chase for the Democratic nomination, Boehner heaped praise on Sen. Bernie Sanders, who he called the “most honest” politician in the race. He also openly speculated that Vice President Joe Biden could enter the race if Hillary Clinton’s email saga becomes a bigger issue as this campaign moves further.
“Don’t be shocked … if two weeks before the convention, here comes Joe Biden parachuting in and Barack Obama fanning the flames to make it all happen,” Boehner said.
