Former President Donald Trump said a filing by special counsel John Durham shows people embroiled in the Russiagate controversy committed “a far bigger crime than Watergate.”
Trump and other allies, who have long derided the investigation into ties between his 2016 presidential campaign and Russia as a “witch hunt,” released a bombastic statement Sunday, claiming Hillary Clinton’s campaign and allies are implicated in a spying scandal to delegitimize his 2016 election victory and presidency.
“What Hillary Clinton and the Radical Left Democrats did with respect to spying on a President of the United States, even while in office, is a far bigger crime than Watergate,” Trump said in a message shared by his Save America PAC, referring to the scandal that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974. “It will be interesting to see how it was covered by the media and what [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell and the RINOs will be doing about it. This is an insult to the Republican Party, but a far greater insult to our Nation.”

Durham’s filing Friday was a motion for the Washington, D.C., federal court to look into possible conflicts of interest related to the defense team of Michael Sussmann, an attorney who has been indicted in the special counsel’s investigation on the accusation that he lied to the FBI in a meeting about Trump and Russia by saying he was not representing any clients when he was acting on behalf of a technology executive and the Clinton campaign. Sussmann denies any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty.
Trump and others argue there is a crime to be found in Durham saying in the filing that he is gathering evidence to show the technology executive, known to be former Neustar Senior Vice President Rodney Joffe, and his associates “exploited” internet traffic at the White House, Trump Tower, and other places to establish a narrative tying Trump to Russia.

However, neither Joffe nor members of the Clinton team have been charged with a crime in Durham’s investigation. Still, on Saturday, the former president said such a finding would have, at one point in history, been punishable by the death penalty.
“The latest pleading from Special Counsel John Durham provides indisputable evidence that my campaign and presidency were spied on by operatives paid by the Hillary Clinton Campaign in an effort to develop a completely fabricated connection to Russia,” Trump stated. “This is a scandal far greater in scope and magnitude than Watergate and those who were involved in and knew about this spying operation should be subject to criminal prosecution.”
