BALTIMORE — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi pounced on President Trump’s Wednesday tweet condemning Nordstrom for dropping Ivanka Trump’s clothing line from their stores, by calling those comments “inappropriate” and labeling him a “totally inappropriate president.”
“Yes, I think it’s inappropriate, but he’s a totally inappropriate president, so it’s totally in keeping with who he is,” Pelosi told reporters. She also ripped into Trump after he called U.S. District Judge James Robart, who ruled against his executive order banning travel from seven countries, a “so-called judge.”
“What I think is more inappropriate, though, is for him to refer to a judge who made a ruling that he didn’t agree with as a ‘so-called judge,'” Pelosi said. “Now we’re talking about the separation of powers, not the thin skin of an incompetent president. So I think we should pay more attention to what he’s saying about other branches of government.”
Pelosi said his comments about the judge are “beneath the dignity of the presidency.” The response came hours after Trump tweeted that his daughter is being “treated so unfairly” by the department store chain after they decided to drop her clothing and accessories line.
The White House on Wednesday defended Trump’s decision to hit Nordstrom in the tweet. Press secretary Sean Spicer argued during Wednesday’s White House briefing that it isn’t “acceptable” for a company to sever ties as Nordstrom is doing.
“When it comes to his family, I think he’s been very clear how proud he is of what they do or what they’ve accomplished,” Spicer said when questioned by a reporter about the tweet. “And for someone to take out their concern with his policies on a family member of his is not acceptable, and the president has every right as a father to stand up for them.”
