A former military officer with 30 years of service has been named chief of staff for the Baltimore City Public SchoolsSystem. Schools Chief Executive Officer Andres Alonso on Thursday put Maj. Gen. Bennie Williams in the high-ranking position in an effort to bring changes to the way the system operates.

In his new capacity, Williams will be responsible for implementation of school system plans, policies and programs as well as leadership guidance as they relate to the goals of the schools? Master Plan, according to a statement released by the school system.

A 1972 graduate of Morgan State University, Williams is a Baltimore native who attended Baltimore City public schools.

Prior to his appointment, Williams had served as chief operations officer for the Defense Logistics Agency, where he oversaw a staff or more than 400 civilian and military personnel.

During that tenure, Williams successfully directed the material acquisition and distribution of 4.6 million items for customers around the world. He also provided policy oversight and direction to a worldwide organization of more than 22,000 employees, with an annual operation budget of more than $31 billion, the statement said.

“In selecting Gen. Bennie Williams, the superintendent adds to his cabinet a very seasoned and well-tested administrator,” said Morgan State University President Earl Richardson.

Alonso, who took over the helm of schools leadership in June, added that Williams will help transform city schools into the best among urban districts in the country.

“He brings back to his beloved community of Baltimore extraordinary capacity and expertise in financial, educational, operational and community leadership,” Alonso said.
