Mike Pence files paperwork to run for president in 2024

Former Vice President Mike Pence has filed to run for president in 2024.

Pence filled out paperwork for a presidential campaign with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, ahead of his launch on Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa, also the same day as his 64th birthday.

He will take on former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination after their public falling-out following the 2020 presidential election.

Pence and Trump, two former running mates, are headed for an unprecedented campaign against each other. Pence will especially need to win back evangelicals, who make up a sizable contingent of the GOP primary voters, after his break with Trump.

The former president remains the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination according to most polls, while Pence has pulled single-digit poll numbers.

Over the weekend, Pence joined Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), along with other 2024 hopefuls, for the annual “Roast and Ride” fundraiser event. The motorcycle ride was held in Iowa, a crucial early nominating state that any Republican Trump challenger will need to win in order to defeat Trump for the nomination.

Pence also faces stiff competition from Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who is widely regarded as Trump’s chief rival for 2024.

The former vice president is also set to hold a town hall with CNN on Wednesday, just days after former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley participated in a town hall with the network.
