Watchdog files motion demanding release of Clinton chief’s testimony

A watchdog group on Thursday filed a motion seeking to prevent Hillary Clinton’s former chief of staff from keeping her testimony about Clinton’s illicit server out of public view.

“Never before has … an agency or its head created an off-grid communications system to conduct official government business, the effect of which was to shield an agency head’s records from the public for years,” attorneys for Judicial Watch said in a motion filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The group is seeking the right to release video of testimony given by Cheryl Mills about her knowledge of the private server that Clinton surreptitiously set up in her basement. Mills served for four years as Clinton’s top aide at the State Department.

“Mrs. Clinton’s and the State Department’s actions were so egregious that this court granted plaintiff discovery to uncover evidence as to whether Mrs. Clinton and the State Department deliberately thwarted [the Freedom of Information Act],” the filing added. “As chief of staff and counselor to Mrs. Clinton during her entire four years as secretary of state, Ms. Mills’ testimony is instrumental … to the public’s understanding of ‘the creation, purpose and use of the clintonemail.com’ system.”

Mills is scheduled to give her testimony in court on Friday. Though the session will be recorded, Mills’ attorneys have sought to prevent that video from being released to the public, arguing that Judicial Watch could engage in “selective” editing.

The group interviewed Lewis Lukens, a deputy assistant secretary of state, on the same topic on May 18. A transcript of that session was scheduled for release sometime on Thursday.
