CDC confirms another case of coronavirus in America

Another person in the United States who recently traveled to China has been diagnosed with the coronavirus, bringing the total to 13.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Tuesday that a patient who had been evacuated from China tested positive for the illness. The CDC said in a press release that the patient was in California.

The outbreak originated in Wuhan, China, and has since spread to more than 43,000 people worldwide and killed more than 1,000, most of whom were in mainland China. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned on Tuesday that the virus is a serious threat both in China and in other countries.

“With 99% of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country — but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world,” Tedros said. “It’s hard to believe that just two months ago, this virus, which has come to captivate the attention of media, financial markets, and political leaders, was completely unknown to us.”

The remarks by Tedros come a day after an international team of experts arrived in China to investigate the outbreak. WHO declared a global public health emergency last month in response to the virus.
