Vice President Kamala Harris declared her trip to Guatemala and Mexico a “success” while speaking to reporters in Mexico City Tuesday night.
Her first foreign foray since the inauguration, Harris opened by reiterating her goal for the trip: addressing the root causes of northern migration as being critical to solving the “problem” at the United States’s southern border. President Joe Biden sent his understudy to Latin America for talks as the summer is expected to see a swell of migrants at the southern border.
HARRIS SAYS SHE’S BEEN TO THE BORDER AND ‘WILL GO AGAIN’
“I want to be very clear that the problem at the border in large part, if not entirely, stems from the problems in these countries,” she stated.
“If we are to address the issues that impact the southern border of the United States,” said the former California senator, “We have to have the ability to address the root causes of why people leave.”
Harris said the “tangible” agreements she brokered with both Guatemala and Mexico on the trip “are the results of the work leading up to this week.”
“Do I declare this trip a success?” she posed. “Yes, I do. It is a success in terms of a pathway that’s about progress. We have been successful in making progress.”
