Va. unemployment rate dips slightly in September

The unemployment rate in Virginia dipped slightly over the last two months, from 6.9 percent in August to 6.8 percent in September, the Virginia Employment Commission announced Friday.

The rate is the same as last September, but the unemployment numbers have been dropping steadily since hitting a high of 7.3 percent in March, the commission said. The national unemployment rate in September was 9.6 percent.

The state’s non-farm payroll employment increased by 20,100 jobs as public and private colleges reopened, according to the commission.
