House Speaker Nancy Pelosi referred to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as “Moscow Mitch” during a speech, echoing MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough, who coined the now-viral moniker.
Pelosi was speaking before the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association in Springfield, Illinois, when she made the remarks about the Kentucky Republican. She attacked McConnell for blocking certain legislation from the Democratic-controlled House from moving forward in the Senate.
“We all want to invest in building our democracy and saving it from any enemies, foreign and domestic,” Pelosi said.
“We’ve sent our legislation to the Senate. Moscow Mitch says that he is the Grim Reaper. Imagine describing yourself as the Grim Reaper, that he’s going to bury all this legislation,” she added. “Well, we have news for him. All this legislation is alive and well in the general public.”
In late July, McConnell pushed back on criticism over blocking election security bills from moving through the Senate by unanimous consent. McConnell pointed out the hundreds of millions already spent on election security and the “huge strides” that have already been made on improving it.
“Over the last several days, I was called unpatriotic, un-American, and essentially treasonous by a couple of left-wing pundits on the basis of bold-faced lies,” McConnell said. “I was accused of aiding and abetting the very man I’ve singled out as an adversary and opposed for nearly 20 years, Vladimir Putin.”
