Georgetown’s Thompson declares for NBA Draft

Hollis Thompson entered Georgetown early, and he’s leaving early, too. After three years with the Hoyas, the 6-foot-8 junior sharpshooter plans to sign with an agent and head to the NBA Draft, the school announced Tuesday.

The Hoyas don’t have any returning seniors next season and could’ve used his experience. But after entering Georgetown in the spring of 2009, Thompson was on pace to graduate early. More importantly, he’d already tested the draft waters last year. He averaged 12.8 points and 5.5 rebounds this season and is projected as a potential second-round pick.

“We fully anticipated he would enter the 2012 draft after this season,” Hoyas coach John Thompson III said in a statement.

Hollis Thompson leaves as the Hoyas’ all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage (.440) and set his season-high in scoring in a losing effort in the NCAA tournament for three straight years, with 16 points against Ohio in 2010, 26 vs. VCU in 2011 and 23 in last week’s third-round loss to North Carolina State.
