If Donald Trump wants to eke out a victory in the battleground state of Wisconsin, he needs to start focusing on his opponent and issues that are important to Americans, Republican Gov. Scott Walker said Tuesday.
“It’s a roller coaster here,” Walker told Fox News on Tuesday, describing the state of the race in Wisconsin between Trump and Hillary Clinton. “I think that’s going to go up and down and a lot of that is going to depend on whether or not the focus is on her and Donald Trump or whether the national media talks about sideshow issues.”
Walker urged Trump to help the national media focus more on Clinton by not making claims or statements that divert attention away from issues that continue to cast a shadow over her campaign. He identified the Clinton Foundation’s possible pay-to-play practices as an example of an issue Trump, and the media, should be discussing more regularly.
“If Donald Trump can keep the focus on her and give speeches like he gave yesterday, where he clearly lays out a very presidential approach as to how he’s going to address the safety and security of our nation, he can win,” Walker predicted. But he warned that if Trump “gets off on other issues, it becomes much more difficult.”
“People here in Wisconsin want a change. Hillary Clinton is not a change agent, but if she gets talking about other issues other than that, she can win,” he said. “If Donald Trump can get the focus on her and how he’s a change agent, he can win.”
Walker, whose own White House bid ended before primary voting began, is planning to attend Trump’s rally Tuesday evening in Washington County, Wis.
“I’ll be there [and] one of the things I expect … is if Donald Trump is going to win here, he needs to make it clear that the race is between him and Hillary Clinton,” he said.
