President Trump said he would accept the results of the 2020 election and that he only jokes about running for a third term because it drives the media crazy.
“I only joke,” Trump said of his third term talk. “I joke and I say, ‘Watch! I will drive Chuck Todd crazy.'”
“You will accept the results?” Todd asked Trump, referencing the 2020 election.
“One hundred percent. Sure,” Trump responded.
“Whatever happens in 2020. You lose, you’ll be like, ‘You’re not going to like it,’ but you’ll walk out?” Todd asked again.
“In fact, I said in a speech recently, ‘Watch, we’ll drive the media crazy. Let’s go for a third term and then a fourth.’ And some of the media said, ‘He’s going to do it,'” Trump said.
Trump has mused about being president for more than two terms in the past, leading some, such as Bill Maher and even Michael Cohen, to speculate that he will refuse to leave the White House even if he loses reelection.
“He’s now president for life,” Trump said last year in reference to Chinese President Xi Jinping. “And look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot someday.”
In April, Trump joked that he would be in office “at least for 10 or 14 years.”
Trump tweeted a meme Friday that seemed to suggest he would be president for eternity.
