U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than 130 pounds of bologna from a vehicle trying to cross from Mexico into El Paso, Texas, according to a press release issued Thursday.
Field Operations officers stopped a Chevrolet Silverado at the Ysleta international crossing around 8:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The driver, a Mexican citizen, initially told border officials he did not have any agriculture products in his possession.
During a second look over the vehicle, the driver admitted he had rolls of bologna inside, which is prohibited because it is made from pork and could potentially introduce foreign animal diseases to the U.S.
Agriculture specialists with the federal agency removed the packaged meats from the pick-up truck. Inspection of the 12 rolls of Mexican bologna revealed the driver had attempted to sneak 132 pounds of meat over the border.
The “contraband” meat – as it was called – was seized and burned, while the male driver was processed by border officials and returned to Mexico.
