The first day of summer is this week, and the new season is starting with a bang. Forecasters said the D.C. area can expect hot temperatures beginning Tuesday.
Today is likely to be the coolest day of the week by far, with the National Weather Service predicting a high temperature at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport of about 77 degrees. There’s also a chance of showers today and overnight.
The heat begins Tuesday, with forecasters predicting a high of about 89 degrees. The highs for Wednesday (the first day of summer), Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be about 96, 98, 93, 88 and 88 degrees, respectively.
Forecasters said there’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday, but the rest of the hot days are expected to be rain-free.
The record highs at the airport for June 18 through June 24 range from 97 to 101 degrees, according to climate data. Thursday could tie the record high for June 21, which is also 98 degrees.
The normal high temperatures for the week range from 85 to 87 degrees, according to weather service records.
