Heckler interrupts Justice Amy Coney Barrett event

An event with Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library was briefly interrupted Monday night by a heckler shouting toward the stage.

The individual was overheard calling Barrett an “enslaver of women” during a conversation about her nomination process.

“Yes, fortunately, as a mother of seven, I am used to distractions. And sometimes even outbursts,” Barrett quipped after the short-lived disruption.

The heckler was identified as Luna Hernandez, a volunteer with the Los Angeles chapter of RiseUp4AbortionRights.

Hernandez said her interruption made reference to fears that the Supreme Court could overturn or undercut the landmark abortion access ruling in Roe v. Wade.

“When I said that forced motherhood is female enslavement, I was not having a ‘childish outburst.’ I was sounding the alarm on the abortion rights emergency we face,” Hernandez said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “This will be a Handmaid’s Tale nightmare for women. And only the people can stop this, by getting into the streets, by rising up for abortion rights!”

The hourlong dinner event, hosted by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, featured a discussion about Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court by former President Donald Trump in 2020, tidbits of her personal life, and more.

Barrett is no stranger to protesters. During her confirmation hearings, anti-abortion demonstrators picketed in front of the Supreme Court building, some donning red cloaks akin to those in The Handmaid’s Tale.
