Maryland unemployment increases in July

Maryland’s unemployment rate increased to 4.4 percent in July, up from 4 percent in June, according to preliminary data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate at this time last year was 3.6 percent. The number of unemployed in the state increased by about 10,900 from June to July.

Regional and state unemployment rates were mostly higher in July. Overall, 43 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, six states registered decreases and one state had no change.

The national employment rate rose in July to 5.7 percent, a full percentage point higher than a year ago.
