The presidential candidates, by and large, have gone to the dogs when it comes to their pets, except for Beto O’Rourke’s turtle.
On the Republican side, pets have not been a focus since George W. Bush’s Scottish Terrier named Barney, a gift from then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, scampered through the halls of the White House.
President Trump has forgone the longtime tradition of having a pet at the White House. He has no pets at all.
But the Democratic hopefuls aren’t bucking tradition, and are sticking mostly with dogs, NBC News reported.
Former Texas congressman O’Rourke has two Labradors named Rosie and Artemis. But his family also includes a cat, Silver, and turtle, Gus, which had been missing but has since been found, according to Artemis’ Twitter account.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has a spry golden retriever named Bailey by her side.
South Bend, Ind., Mayor Peter Buttigieg has two beagle mixes, Truman and Buddy, that he often tweets about.
Former Vice President Joe Biden just got a new German shepherd named Major to join his other aging dog of the same breed, Champ.
New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has a labradoodle named Maple that she has had for two years.
Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s dog, Skye, is a mix that he describes as part Akita, bulldog, and chow chow.
Rep. Tim Ryan has two shelter dogs named Bear and Buckeye that look to be mixes.
Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney has a Maltese named Mimi.
California Rep. Eric Swalwell has a black Lab named Penny.
Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado has a little spaniel mix named Pepper.
There are reports that businessman Andrew Yang has a canine companion, but the name and breed have not been confirmed.
Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey doesn’t have a dog, but has said on the campaign trail that if he he wins the presidency he will get one — a promise similar to the one former President Barack Obama made his daughters during the 2008 election.
