Steyer invokes Nazi prosecutor father to condemn Trump

Presidential candidate Tom Steyer invoked his father, who prosecuted Nazi war criminals after World War II, as he lashed out at President Trump during the eighth Democratic debate in New Hampshire on Friday night.

“I did start the ‘need to impeach’ movement in October of 2017,” Steyer said. “And my father was one of the people who prosecuted the Nazi war criminals after World War II. And that’s part of the reason I started it.”

Newsweek writer Jonathan Alter told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell that Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday reminded him of Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda minister.

“The Republicans have rolled over, they’ve had a sham trial, they’ve refused to have witnesses, they’ve covered up the truth for the American people,” Steyer said.

Trump was acquitted of two articles of impeachment passed by the House of Representatives in December.

“It doesn’t matter anymore that he’s a crook, and he’s always been a crook, and he always will be a crook. Right now, what we have to do is beat him in November,” added Steyer.

Steyer received 0.3% of the vote in Iowa, winning only seven of the more-than-1,500 delegates available. Steyer, who has spent wildly on his outsider candidacy, is polling well in South Carolina, the third primary of the 2020 election.
