A singer and actress who has fiercely criticized the Trump administration over the past four years said the president going into quarantine for the coronavirus is “convenient” because it could keep him out of the next round of debates.
Writing to Twitter early Friday morning before President Trump announced he was positive for COVID-19, Bette Midler said the timing of Trump’s quarantine was “interesting” and suggested that the president could be using the situation as a cover to not participate in a debate with Democratic nominee Joe Biden in two weeks time.
“Just learned that Hope Hicks tested positive for COVID,” Midler tweeted. “Timing’s so interesting. I guess Trump’s quarantining will mean no rallies, and no more debates. Convenient.”
Just learned that Hope Hicks tested positive for Covid. Timing’s so interesting. I guess Trump’s quarantining will mean no rallies, and no more debates. Convenient. It’s awful to always think the worst, but after four years of relentless lying? Can’t be helped. No trust left.

A little over an hour after Midler made her comment, Trump announced that he and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, tested positive for COVID-19 hours after it was revealed that White House adviser Hope Hicks tested positive.
“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19,” Trump tweeted Thursday. “We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”
Midler, who wasn’t the only person to question the validity of Trump’s positive test, added that she has “no trust left” with Trump after a tenure which she says was filled with “relentless lying.”
“It’s awful to always think the worst, but after four years of relentless lying?” Middle said. “Can’t be helped.”
