McDonnell: Special session could waste money

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said Thursday that he would like to hold a special session of the General Assembly to vote on his government-reform proposals, including his plans to privatize state-run liquor stores. But, the governor said, he also doesn’t want to waste taxpayer money on such a venture.

“The sooner we get it done, the sooner I can start putting that money to transportation,” he said on his monthly radio appearance on WRVA 1140 Richmond.

“At the same time…I’m not going to waste time,” he continued. “The previous governor called a couple special sessions and they were disasters. People got together for a week, did nothing, went home, cost us a lot of money. I’m not going to do that.”

“We’ll do a count here in the near future, and see where we are,” McDonnell said. “Eventually this is going to happen…the free market always does things better than government when it comes to a commercial product like alcohol.”
