WikiLeaks founder Assange marries former lawyer in British prison

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his long-term partner and former lawyer, Stella Moris, married during visiting hours at a British prison Wednesday.

It was a small ceremony in London’s Belmarsh with few people present. The gathering included their two sons and two prison wardens, according to the New York Post. The couple was not allowed to pose together for photos, and Assange was absent for the cake-cutting outside the prison.

“I am very happy and very sad,” Moris said as she cut her wedding cake alone. “I love Julian with all my heart, and I wish he were here.”

Moris complained that it was “absurd” that they could not pose for wedding photos. “What kind of security threat could a wedding picture pose?”

The prison regularly permits photography, and Moris believes the prison fears that “people will see Julian as a human being,” she wrote in the Guardian.

Assange and Moris were given permission to marry from prison authorities last November.

Assange, 50, was arrested at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in April 2019 and was indicted in the United States for his role in publishing leaked classified information.

The Justice Department won a British court appeal in December 2021 to extradite Assange to the U.S.

The U.K. Supreme Court rejected his request for an appeal in mid-March, but he still has options to fight the prospect of extradition.
