President Trump announced he will nominate the deputy secretary of the Department of Transportation to be the next deputy attorney general.
Jeffrey Rosen, of Virginia, would succeed Rod Rosenstein, who is expected to leave his post next month, the White House confirmed Tuesday evening.
Rosenstein’s departure has been expected, especially since early on in the two years he has been serving the Trump administration, he took on oversight of the Russia probe over whether Russia aided in Trump’s victory.
Previously, Rosen served as general counsel and senior policy adviser for the White House Office of Management and Budget and as general counsel of the Department of Transportation under former President George W. Bush.
Rosen’s appointment comes on the heels of the Senate confirmation of Trump’s attorney general nominee, William Barr, last week.
Barr passed on mostly party-line votes as Democrats criticized his ability to fairly oversee special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election.
