White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Sunday that reference to her husband as “Mr. Kellyanne Conway” is something feminists should celebrate.
“I think the ‘Mr. Kellyanne Conway’ comment is instructive,” Conway said on “Fox News Sunday.”
“People describe my husband as ‘Kellyanne Conway’s husband’ more often than they do describe him by his first name so I’m sure the feminists are really cheering me on today, an independent, strong-willed strong woman in a very powerful position who disagrees with her husband,” she quipped. “I think that’s the essence of what they called independent women feminism.”
The comment came at end of her response to a question about whether her job is impacted by an op-ed her lawyer husband George co-authored with Neal Katyal in the New York Times, arguing that President Trump’s appointment of Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general was unconstitutional. Host Chris Wallace first showed her a clip of Trump fielding the same question from reporters on Friday, to which he replied, “You mean Mr. Kellyanne Conway?” Trump also opined that George Conway was “just trying to get publicity for himself” and then urged the reporters to ask Kellyanne Conway herself.
Conway said the issue doesn’t affect her or her job at all.
“I’ve never been doing better personally or professionally,” Conway said, adding that she offers her advice to the president in private. “I don’t need to put on the opinion pages because I’m counsel to the president.”
Conway also said the president and his attorneys are “convinced” that the appointment of Whitaker to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions is constitutional.
