A major winter storm that traveled the East Coast Sunday into Monday left at least 150,000 homes and businesses without power by Monday afternoon.
The winter storm brought heavy snow to the Northeast and caused over 1,400 flight cancellations. The system also triggered tornadoes in Florida that damaged dozens of homes and led to power outages in the state.
EAST COAST AIRPORTS EXPERIENCING HIGH NUMBER OF CANCELLATIONS AS WINTER STORM BARRELS THROUGH
“The significant winter storm that has been plaguing the eastern third of the country will slowly wind down today. However, significant impacts due to snow, ice, wind, and coastal flooding will persist across a large area,” the National Weather Service said.
Over 50 million people were issued winter weather alerts Monday. At least seven states had widespread power outages by Monday afternoon, including Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, according to PowerOutage.us. Over 600,000 homes and businesses were previously left without power Sunday.
The storm traveled through Florida up to Maine. It brought over a foot of snow and icy driving conditions to some parts of the Northeast, leading to hundreds of vehicle collisions, notably in Virginia and North Carolina.
The system produced offshore winds with a force up to 60 knots, close to hurricane levels, the NWS said. This created tumultuous coastal conditions and raised the prospect of flooding in places ranging from parts of Virginia to Maine on Monday.
Jan 17: What a difference 24 hours makes. Yesterday was full of active weather, including multiple tornadoes. Today….not so much. Plenty of sunshine and a dry, pleasant air mass in place. A stray sprinkle is possible today along with hazardous beach/marine conditions. #flwx pic.twitter.com/gMwlG3zI6F

The NWS expects the storm to move into parts of Canada by Tuesday, bringing heavy snow to the upper Great Lakes. It also believes that conditions in the Southern High Plains and Southern Rockies Monday have elevated the risk of wildfires in those regions.
