Residents and veterans from Harford County gathered at Shamrock Park this weekend in honor of Flag Day, which is officially celebrated Wednesday.

Flag Day is a nod to June 14, 1777, the day the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag, according to the American Flag Foundation Inc., a Baltimore-based organization devoted to promoting the holiday.

Flag Day was first celebrated in 1861, the first summer of the Civil War, in Hartford, Conn.

Sixteen years later, the U.S. recognized the centennial of the original flag resolution with the first national observance of Flag Day.

Flag Day revelers can catch a military flyover and a fireworks display Wednesday night at Fort McHenry National Monument.

The festivities, which kick off at 6:30 p.m., also will feature live music and a pause for the Pledge of Allegiance.
