President-elect Trump invited Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to meet with him at Trump Tower on Monday, aides said.
Gabbard was one of the few elected Democrats who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton. The progressive lawmaker from Hawaii was the first of several officials slated to meet Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Monday.
Jason Miller, a spokesman for the transition team, told reporters on a conference call that it was “premature” to discuss what roles for which Gabbard is under consideration. She is a rumored contender to become U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, as she is herself a veteran.
Gabbard did not sign onto a letter with 169 of her House colleagues last week condemning Trump’s selection of Steve Bannon as his chief strategist.
Miller said on Monday that Trump wanted to meet with Gabbard to “receive her input on several different ideas.”
“She obviously has a very distinguished track record,” Miller said.
