Presidential candidate Rep. Eric Swalwell posted a portion of interview with Vice News that raised a lot of eyebrows. Sharing the clip, Swalwell said he knows he’s “another white guy,” but he knows how to let others speak.
“Well a white guy who doesn’t see other identities, or understand other experiences should not be president. I do,” the California Democrat said. “And where there would be gaps in my knowledge or my experience , I will pass the mic to people who do have that experience.”
Swalwell also said he promised to ask a woman to serve as his vice president should he win the nomination.

Swalwell’s comments were seen as pandering or plain ridiculous.

I’m sorry I have to be an adult and tell you this, sir…
Your value to society is not determined by the color of your skin. You are not a “white man.” You are just a human being.
More specifically, you are a human being polling at 0% because of nonsense like this. https://t.co/1it4QfKnsR

You should pass the mic to someone that has a chance to win. https://t.co/zAPQHrOwT0

His pitch is (I’m paraphrasing here): “Democrats like me are better white people.” This is such a bad pitch. VICE consistently manages to troll political figures into sounding like unintentionally racist or sexist job applicants. https://t.co/e0kB4myZU2
