The conservative Club for Growth is running ads urging voters to pressure Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney to support the confirmation of federal judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.
The group launched television and digital advertising in Alaska and Utah on Tuesday. The spots promote Barrett’s qualifications and encourage voters in Alaska and Utah to call the offices of Murkowski and Romney and insist that Barrett be confirmed.
President Trump nominated the federal appellate judge to succeed Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Sept. 18.
“A woman of remarkable intellect and character. Brilliant, wise, impeccable temperament,” the Club for Growth ad says. “Tell Sen. Romney: Confirm judge Barrett to the Supreme Court.” The club’s ad in Alaska is similar but features Murkowski instead.
Senate Republicans intend to confirm Barrett before Election Day. They appear to have the 50 votes needed to elevate her to the Supreme Court. But with no Democratic support expected, Republicans can afford to lose just three votes.
The Club for Growth is pressuring Murkowski because she has expressed opposition to filling vacant Supreme Court seats this close to an election. Murkowski has not ruled out confirming Barrett. Romney also welcomed Barrett’s nomination. The senator, however, often clashes with Trump — which could account for the group’s decision to advertise in Utah.
Democrats are protesting Barrett’s nomination. They argue that the winner of the presidential election should nominate Ginsburg’s successor.
