New York Times omits line from Floyd attorney saying Ma’Khia Bryant was ‘unarmed’ when fatally shot by police

The New York Times omitted a line from George Floyd attorney Ben Crump that claimed Ma’Khia Bryant, the 16-year-old Columbus girl fatally shot by police Tuesday, was unarmed at the time of her shooting.

“As we breathed a collective sigh of relief today, a community in Columbus felt the sting of another police shooting as @ColumbusPolice killed an unarmed 15yo Black girl named Makiyah Bryant,” Crump said on Twitter shortly after news of the shooting was reported. “Another child lost! Another hashtag.”

The Columbus Police Department released body camera footage late Tuesday showing Bryant charging another woman with what appears to be a knife just before the fatal shooting, possibly contradicting Crump’s claim.

In the New York Times coverage of the shooting, the publication quoted Crump’s reaction to the incident but omitted his false claim that Bryant was unarmed.

“‘As we breathed a collective sigh of relief today, a community in Columbus felt the sting of another police shooting’” Mr. Crump said. “‘Another child lost! Another hashtag,’” the paper reported Crump saying.

Crump, a civil rights attorney who represented the family of George Floyd, struck a celebratory tone earlier in the day after former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts in the death of Floyd.

“GUILTY!” Crump said on Twitter after the verdict was read. “Painfully earned justice has finally arrived for George Floyd’s family. This verdict is a turning point in history and sends a clear message on the need for accountability of law enforcement. Justice for Black America is justice for all of America!”

Chauvin now awaits sentencing in the controversial case.
