It used to be when an ageing politician hired a younger leggy blonde people would not notice much. It was par for the course for Members of Parliament to hire women they wanted to sleep with as “researchers.” No doubt this is par for the course in most governing bodies.
In the ‘post-expenses scandal’ UK people are getting more introspective about how MPs are spending the taxpayers money.
That said these days Russians in London are not such a big deal. Russian accents are all over central London especially. However eyebrows were raised when a Liberal Democrat MP, who is on the Defence Committee, hired a series of Russian beauties.
It shocked no one when one of them was discovered to be a Russian spy. She is about to be deported. The MP denies she is a spy, of course. As First Post reported about the entire drama.
“Zatuliveter told the Daily Telegraph, via email, that “nobody explained to me the reason of the deportation” and says she is appealing. As for the accusations that she is a Russian spy, she says: “No, there is no truth in this suggestion.”
Then again Rod Liddle in the Spectator the says that the MP is just being true to form. He has made a habit of betrayal his entire career.
“You can’t trust traitors, any of them. And some of us have long memories. Mike Hancock was once a Labour MP but defected, along with a bunch of other opportunistic monkeys, to the SDP. He is now a Liberal Democrat.”
The former UK Labour government was not exactly unaware that something odd was going on. As the Telegraph reported..
“Chris Bryant, Labour’s former Europe Minister, said he moved to replace Hancock at the head of the cross-party Russian group because of his “pro-Putin and pro-Medvedev position”.
Just because the cold war is over doesn’t mean the Russian have given up on the old “honey pot” method of procuring secrets.
