House Speaker Paul Ryan promised Sunday help is coming to Texas and Louisiana, with the House Appropriations Committee introducing legislation to fully fund the Trump administration’s initial request for Hurricane Harvey relief funding.
“Families and communities affected by Hurricane Harvey have a long road ahead, and the House will be with them every step of the way,” the Wisconsin Republican wrote in a statement.
“The president has made clear Texas and Louisiana will have the resources they need, and this package is our first step of keeping that promise.”
The White House on Friday asked Congress to appropriate $7.85 billion for initial recovery efforts with $7.4 billion dollars set aside for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Relief Fund.
“As we continue to pray for the victims of this tragedy, I want to thank the president and the members of the Texas and Louisiana delegations for their leadership,” Ryan continued. “They should all know that help is coming.”
Ryan added he hopes Congress will be guided by the courage shown by those in the hurricane’s path as the legislative process to secure the money ramps up.
