Feds renewing focus on prosecuting medical marijuana as D.C. rolls out plans to open shops

As D.C. rolls out its medical marijuana program, the Justice Department is renewing its focus on prosecuting similar programs in other jurisdictions, according to a memo obtained by the Reason magazine

According to Reason’s report, the memo amends a 2009 policy that appeared to reduce the federal government’s focus on the drug’s use to treat cancer and other ailments and reminds federal prosecutors that medical marijuana is illegal.

“Persons who are in the business of cultivating, selling or distributing marijuana, and those who knowingly facilitate such activities, are in violation of the Controlled Substances Act, regardless of state law,” the memo says.

It makes you wonder what the feds will do when medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation centers open in their backyard.
