Trump in 2012: Electoral College is ‘disaster for a democracy’

President-elect Donald Trump hasn’t always been a fan of the political system that catapulted him to victory Tuesday.

In November 2012, right around the time of the presidential election between Mitt Romney and President Obama, Trump tweeted that the Electoral College is a “disaster.”

It is not clear what prompted that tweet, as Obama won both the popular vote and the Electoral College that year.

As of Wednesday evening, it appears likely that Hillary Clinton will win the popular vote in the 2016 election. Trump won most of the electoral votes, which forced Clinton to concede the race to the billionaire businessman in the early morning hours.

Trump spent a lot of time on the campaign trail railing against what he believed was a “rigged” electoral system, but he wasn’t complaining Tuesday night as he gave his presidential acceptance speech.

Old tweets have been known to contradict Trump’s modern rhetoric, like the time Trump posted a photo to Instagram featuring him eating a McDonald’s hamburger, fries and a diet Coke, which reminded people of an October 2012 tweet in which he declared that, “I have never seen a thin person drinking diet Coke.”
