FBI Director James Comey predicted Monday that the Russians will likely try to meddle in future U.S. elections, including the 2020 contest where President Trump will likely seek re-election.
“They’ll be back,” Comey told the House Intelligence Committee. “They’ll be back in 2020. They may be back in 2018, and one of the lessons they may draw from this is that they were successful because they introduced chaos and division and discord and sewed doubt in this amazing country of ours and our democratic process.”
“It’s possible they’re misreading that as ‘it worked, so we’ll come back and hit them again in 2020,'” Comey said. “I don’t know, but I think we have to assume they’re coming back.”
Comey’s comments came in response to questions from Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., who asked if the U.S. should expect the Russian interference to be “amplified” in future elections.
National Security Director Mike Rogers echoed Comey’s statement and said he fully expects the Russians to “continue this level of activity” moving ahead into future elections.
