Larry Dillard, longtime communications director and friend of Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., has died.
“There are no words to describe the profound loss and sorrow that pervades all those who had the good fortune to know Larry,” Scott said in a statement on his Facebook page. “He will be remembered as a tireless worker, devoted friend and mentor to many. Larry was a passionate history buff, avid Yankees fan, fountain of knowledge, skillful diplomat and the consummate spokesperson. He will be thought about often and sorely missed. My deepest sympathy and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus also issued a release regarding Dillard’s passing.
“On behalf of the VLBC, I extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Larry’s wife Sherry, son Brandon, and other family members,” said state Sen. Mamie Locke, D-Hampton. “We also express sympathy to Congressman Scott, Chief of Staff Joni Ivey, and all members of the staff.”
From the Daily Press:
Dillard was born in Newport News but graduated from Hampton High School before studying at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) and Virginia Commonwealth University. He worked in journalism before moving into politics, working for the Republican National Committee and for Virginia Congressman Thomas Bliley.
After returning to his hometown Dillard was recognized as a tireless activist in the Southeast Community of Newport News. He joined Scott’s staff in the state legislature and was his campaign manager when Scott ran for Congress in 1992 to represent the newly formed third district.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Newton Dillard, his son Brandon Dillard, and his brother Randy Dillard.
