Bill Maher slams ‘ultrawoke’ liberals, says political correctness is ‘worse than ever’

Comedian Bill Maher railed against “ultrawoke” liberal Democrats for being too politically correct and for the outrage they show toward those who fall short of their ever-changing standards.

Frustrated by liberals who rally “Twitter mobs” against people who say things they dislike, Maher said in an interview published Friday, “They’re the millennials who probably grew up with helicopter parents who afforded them a sense of entitlement. They are certainly more fragile than previous generations. Trigger warnings. Safe spaces. Crying rooms. Microaggressions. That crowd feels like anything that upsets their tender sensibilities is completely out of line.”

Maher, 63, has consistently pushed back against politically correct culture throughout his career. Currently the host of Real Time on HBO, Maher speaks often about unproductive sensitivity among both the Left and Right. “I tried to drive a stake through political correctness in the 90s,” Maher said of his former show Politically Incorrect. “I obviously failed dismally. It’s worse than ever.”

The comedian specifically cited Twitter as a source for the ultra-sensitive and described the adherence to a narrow range of acceptable opinions as dogmatic. “Religions always talk about the one true religion,” he said. “Now on the left we have the one true opinion. If you go against that, you do so at your peril … Comedians are afraid to make jokes in clubs, because somebody will tape it and send it out on Twitter and get the mob after you.”

Outlining the real effect outrage culture has on the Democrats’ chance of winning the presidential election next year, Maher also called on the party to distance themselves from liberals who insist on political correctness. “The most important thing that the Democrats can do to win the next election is to broom this element out of their party and stand up to the Twitter mob and the ultrawoke.”
