Priebus asked Boehner to convince Trump to avert a government shutdown: Report

Former House Speaker John Boehner helped talk President Trump out of vetoing the bill keeping the government open, according to a report.

Axios reported Sunday that White House chief of staff Reince Priebus called Boehner as Trump considered vetoing the $1 trillion bill to prevent a partial government shutdown. Boehner served as speaker of the House during the last government shutdown in 2013.

Boehner reportedly told associates that Priebus asked him to convince Trump to sign the bill. After saying he would, Boehner received a call from Trump and told the president he should be happy there’s a substantial increase in military spending while not having to make a big concession for domestic spending in exchange. He also warned Trump that the last thing he needed was a government shutdown.

Trump signed the spending bill, which will fund the government until September, on May 5.
